Amid low liquidity, price for hydrous ethanol s in SP

Cepea, November 18, 2021 – After rising sharply for five weeks, the prices for hydrous and anhydrous ethanol dropped in the Brazilian market between Nov. 8 and 12. The CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 3.8099/liter, 0.47% down from that in the last week of October (25 – 29). However, for anhydrous ethanol, despite the weekly decrease, the average of the CEPEA/ESALQ Index between Nov. 8 and 12 was still 2.18% higher than that in the last week of October, at BRL 4.4299/liter.

Devaluations reflected the low liquidity in the spot market of SP in that period, majorly because many purchasers were not interested in buying the biofuel – distributors were only collecting at ethanol plants the product previously purchased.

Although processing of the sugarcane from the 2021/22 season has ended in a significant number of plants in SP and in central-southern Brazil, uncertainties related to the effects of the weather on crops are still influencing plans for next season. According to a report from Unica released on November 10, 128 plants in SP had ended sugarcane processing by the end of October.

EXPORTS – In October, Brazil exported 164.5 million liters of ethanol, 18% less than that shipped in September (200 million liters), according to Secex. Revenue totaled USD 98.9 million, against USD 123.8 million in the previous month. Compared to the same period last year, Brazilian ethanol exports decreased by 61.6%, and revenue, by 46.2%. The United States imported 63.4 million liters of the Brazilian ethanol in October, 38.6% of the total volume exported in the month.
